Well why not massage a dog? Dogs have body's too and they feel pain, discomfort and stiffness just as we do. Although, unlike us that whinge and complain when we're in pain, dogs suffer in silence. When you understand why it's natural for them to do this, it will make more sense to you why they have to do this and why seeking a trained canine massage therapist is the most loving gift you can give you much loved loyal friend.
Dogs do suffer with silent pain due to muscular tightness, muscle weakness causing imbalances and compensation patterns through their system which can then lead to joint stiffness and joint issues as they age. Just because they don't tell you they're suffering, doesn't mean they don't have pain. Quite the opposite.
Having body tension, tightness and weakness also effects the internal structures of the body like organs and glands causing further the mind - body - spirit to imbalance. Howlistic Healing seeks to balance the whole dog. Not just the body or the mind or the spirit.

Home visits can be arranged if you can't make it to the Lake Cathie Howlistic Healing hound room. Howlistic Healing services the Port Macquarie and surrounding area. See list below. *Additional travelling costs for home visits.
Port Macquarie | Wauchope | Laurieton | Lake Cathie | Bonny Hills | Kew | Kendall | Dunbogan | North Haven | Bob's Creek | Heron's Creek | Camden Haven | Sancrox | Telegraph Point

The majority of dog owners will notice an improvement from the first session. This can be seen in the post session movement observation and will continue into the following week.
While the added information from the session is processed by the dogs nervous system they may rest more or they may become more active due to restrictions in their muscles and fascia being released allowing them to feel greater freedom throughout their body.
Depending on each dog's issues, challenges and treatment given, the outcome will differ.
I'd recommend ceasing treatment 2 days prior to a competition or exercise activity if you have a performance or working dog. A treatment after competition and excessive exercise is highly advisable.
Dogs will typically relax if allowed to by their owner once they get home or after I leave from a home visit.
Dogs who are booked in due to muscle strains, soreness and gait problems will typically need 3-4 sessions spaced approximately 1 week apart. It is dependent upon each dogs improvement and recovery.

When you book in for an appointment you will be directed to complete an online form about you and your dog's details, health, background and any known veterinary information. Once this is received your appointment will be confirmed.
When you arrive, Robyn encourages you to allow your dog to take the time to sniff around and maybe look for a spot on the front lawn to pee. As you know, if you have a new appointment and you are a feeling anxious, you'll need to go too! It's the dreaded "nervous wee response".
At your appointment Robyn will discuss the submitted form and anything you'd like to share with her.
An observation and assessment will be carried out and depending on how your dog responds, a hands on approach may follow.
As each dog and its behaviour is so unique and individualised, just like us humans, your dog may not respond to Robyn in a way that you expect them to. Don't be disheartened. Most, if not all dogs won't be to eager to lie still and have an unknown human touching them. However, their second session will be a lot different because they remember her by their senses and their awareness. With each preceding session they won't hesitate to come close and have her work on and with them.

Howlistic Healing accepts cash, credit and debit card payments via a secure payment gateway.

Do I Need A Massage?
The short answer is yes of course you need a massage. Who doesn't? You deal with deadlines, long lines, short tempers, traffic on the roads and your dog's bad behaviour. We're all at the receiving end of things we would rather not deal with. Massage can be the valve that eases these pressures.
Massage therapy is useful for many conditions, in addition to relaxation and stress relief. See your doctor for a diagnosis first, and then consult your massage therapist.
Why the need to get a Massage Therapy on a regular basis? Everyday stresses take a toll on us humans. One hour out of your day where you can lay down quietly, the massage therapist through touch connects you to your body. This brings greater awareness of what is going on in your body. Clients are often shocked at the tension they hold even in their forearms or any other area of their body and not feel pain or discomfort prior to the massage. Once they become aware of this tension or pain, it becomes part of the conscious mind and you soon realize that sitting in that static chair causes major problems. Your pelvis, lower back and hips gets a great deal of tension from that static chair, which turns into tired and tight muscles of the back, neck and shoulders. If these area’s are not worked on the problem can become chronic and then the good ole GP gives you pills to swallow or maybe, just maybe sends you to Physiotherapist. I've seen it time and time again where clients are at their wits end because the pills no longer work and their ability to cope with normal activities of daily life are greatly affected and they are left with no joy in their life. It's not the answer is it? Massage therapy is needed by every one of us!
What Happens At Your First Appointment?
Depending on which treatment you book it's a requirement that all new clients complete a health history intake form and to follow is a discussion of the reason(s) you seek the massage treatment. This should take from between 5-10mins. This form is very important as I need to know any medical conditions, contraindications you have or if you are taking any OTC or prescribed medications. Once I know the areas of where I'm treating you have been established (as well as any areas you prefer not to be massaged) I will leave the room where you undress down to your underwear and then you can get on the massage table in between the provided sheets.
During the time you are on the massage table you will be fully draped with a sheet or towel and only the area that I'm treating will be uncovered. Chit chat will be kept to a minimum unless I need feedback from you regarding pain and/or discomfort levels, pressure or I need you to turn over.
What Can I Expect After A Massage Treatment?
Despite all the benefits of massage you do need to be aware of the possible side effects that can occur. Massage therapy appears to have few serious risks if it is performed by a professionally trained therapist and if appropriate cautions are followed. This is why a health history intake form is necessary. Side effects of massage may include temporary pain or discomfort, bruising, swelling and a possible sensitivity or allergy to massage oils or essential oils.
*Cautions about massage therapy include the following:
Vigorous massage should be avoided by people with bleeding disorders or low blood platelet counts and by people taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin.

Massage should not be done in any area of the body with blood clots, fractures, open or healing wounds, skin infections or weakened bones (such as from osteoporosis or cancer) or where there has been a recent surgery.
Although massage therapy appears to be generally safe for cancer patients, it's advisable that they consult their oncologist before having a massage that involves deep or intense pressure. Any direct pressure over a tumor usually is discouraged. Cancer patients should discuss any concerns about massage therapy with their oncologist.
Pregnant women should consult their health care provider before receiving massage therapy.
If you experience any side effects that concern you post massage, please contact Robyn on 0412 693 611 to discuss.
How Often Should I Get A Massage?
This depends on the type of massage treatment that's required for your health and wellbeing. How often you should get a massage depends on several factors, including your physical and emotional needs, your stress levels and your budget. There's no question that you will experience health benefits from massage when you get regular massages. Massage calms the nervous system, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, relieves muscle pain and helps with pain management in conditions such as arthritis, sciatica and muscle spasms.
The therapeutic effects of any massage treatment is cumulative and the more often you get a massage, the better you feel and the more quickly your body will respond. Longer time between massages will slow down the recovery and healing time, so even having a monthly massage will benefit your body, mind and spirit.
If you get a massage once a year, it will be relaxing but it can't undo a lifetime of muscle tension and compensatory postural patterns. Typically, once every week for 4 to 6 weeks if chronic pain is present. When the pain condition has been resolved then the massage style can be adapted to a more relaxed style of treatment for health and wellness benefits.
